How to set up direct deposit

September 4, 2026

Direct deposit is an electronic payment method used by employers to send your paycheck directly to your bank account.

Instead of receiving a paper check, your earnings are deposited automatically on payday.

Because it’s secure, reliable, and convenient for everyone involved, many employers, government agencies, and benefit providers use direct deposit.

How to set up direct deposit

Direct deposit comes with many benefits: you can get paid faster, reduce the risk of lost checks, make trips to the bank less frequently, and plan your bill payments, savings transfers, and other financial goals more easily.

If you recently switched banks or employers, you may also need to update your direct deposit information to make sure you get your money seamlessly.

To set up direct deposit, follow these simple steps:

  1. Grab your account information.

You’ll need:

  • Your bank’s nine-digit routing number
  • Your account number
  • In some cases, to specify whether it’s a checking or savings account

You can find your routing number and account number at the bottom of one of your checks.

This information should also be available in online banking, and many banks (like ours) list their routing number on their website.

  1. Fill out your employer’s direct deposit form.

Most employers provide a direct deposit authorization form during the onboarding process or through their online resource portal. It might be a physical form or an electronic one.

Note that some employers may ask you to include a voided check with the form. If you don’t have checks for your account, reach out to your bank to see how they can provide one.

They may also let you split your deposit between multiple accounts, so make sure you bring in all the account information you need so you can get your deposits.

  1. Submit the form.

Before submitting the form, review your information to make sure everything’s right. Even a small error can delay your paycheck.

Submit it, and your employer will take care of the rest! Just like that, your paycheck will go straight into your account.

  1. Monitor your first deposit.

Once you receive your first deposit, check that it was sent to the correct account and that the dollar amount is accurate.

If you notice any discrepancies, talk to your employer about necessary adjustments and next steps.

Can I split my paycheck?

With direct deposit, many employers give you the option to split your paycheck across multiple accounts.

This can be any easy way to work toward your financial goals without a second thought. For example, you could:

  • Send most of your paycheck to your checking account for everyday expenses
  • Direct a percentage or set dollar amount to your savings account
  • Contribute automatically toward an emergency fund

Therefore, direct deposit is a convenient way to receive your paycheck as well as to meet your goals.
