Mid-century meets modern at our Western Mall branch remodel
After wrapping up a six-month remodel, we reopened our Western Mall branch on June 15.

The building located in front of Best Buy along 41st Street is our first and oldest standalone branch.
Built in 1968, it still retained its mid-century roots prior to the remodel.
“It was a pleasure for us to have this opportunity to revive such a historic branch,” said Facilities Experience Manager Kae Klinkenborg, who has worked at First National Bank for 24 years.
She explained that the Bank has considered updating the branch on and off for the past several years, describing the remodel as long overdue.
An eroding sewer pipe was the main catalyst for the updates, and we closed its doors on December 31, 2025, to begin construction.
Take a look at the newly remodeled branch with these before and after pictures.

Walking into the branch, you’ll notice that the wall between the drive-up window and teller line is gone — which opened up the space and allows our team to provide customers with better service.

We replaced the flooring, furniture, and light fixtures throughout the branch to create a brighter and more modern look.

Regular customers of the branch will notice that the layout was also reconfigured.
There are now two offices on the north side of the branch for Mortgage Banker Chase Hoffman and Personal Banker Dave Forseth.
Meanwhile, Branch Manager Mark Peterson and Teller Supervisor Shawna Rothwell have relocated to the south side.

“It’s essentially a new building inside of an existing exterior structure,” Kae said.

Beneath the surface, the building is equipped with all new plumbing, electrical, and HVAC.
But even with all the updates, it was important for us to maintain some of the mid-century charm of our most historic branch.
We did so by keeping the brick wall on the east side of the building and adding touches of walnut wood in furniture and along the teller line.

The exterior of the branch is virtually untouched, with the exception of a new railing along the entryway.

Setting a standard
This remodel is the most recent in a line of branch updates for First National Bank.
“We’re creating brand standards across our branches,” said Kae, which you can see in the color schemes, furniture, and even the light fixtures that are reminiscent of recent remodels at our Benson Road and downtown Sioux Falls locations.

We also repurposed the branding wall that was previously behind the teller line.

“We worked with great vendors to make this remodel happen in six months,” Kae said.
The Bank partnered with TSP, Gil Haugan, Interstate Office Products, and Smartt Interior Construction to complete the remodel.
“With our partners, the remodel was seamless,” she added. “And we had fun doing it.”
